Ponds offer a unique opportunity for scientific study. If you think of any key biological concept there's a good chance you'll find it illustrated in, or around a pond. They are fine examples of the biosphere in action. "The Pond" examines: community ecology, the importance of biological communities and how scientists work to understand complex scientific concepts by breaking things down into communities; food chains and food webs, including the complexities and problems of examining a food web; key biological process including photosynthesis, the oxygen/carbon cycle and energy transfer along a food chain; the importance of the detritus pathway; adaptations of and interactions between living organisms.
